Academic medical centers like the University of Mississippi Medical Center play an important role in the treatment of all types of injuries and illnesses while training the next generation of physicians, nurses and other health care providers.

These institutions are also leaders in medical research – from experiments in a laboratory to participation in clinical trials – that can provide answers, treatments or even cures.

Medical schools and teaching hospitals are improving the health of their communities by bringing together training, patient care and medical research under one roof. Because of these combined resources, these institutions are responsible for many of the most important breakthroughs in medicine and patient care of the past century.

The Association of American Medical Colleges works with institutions in academic medicine to share information about their important work.
